The SASEC Road Link Project-11: Elenga-Hatikumrul-Rangpur Highway Four-Lane Upgradation has been approved by the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council. The project is a part of the South Asian Sub-regional Economic Cooperation (SASEC) project and will upgrade transport infrastructure with Bangladesh, Nepal, India, and Bhutan. The 190.4 km Elenga-Hatikumrul-Rangpur 4-lane highway will cost $1.5 billion and will be completed through 11 packages. The project is expected to be completed by August 2021.
The government of Bangladesh is planning to construct a new 231.9 km railway line, the Dhaka-Chittagong Express Railway, which will shorten the distance between the two cities by 90 km and reduce travel time by three to four hours. The project will cost $4 billion and take five years to complete. The China Railway Engineering Group has helped with the feasibility study, and 10 new stations will be built along the route. Additionally, other railway projects are underway in the country, including the conversion of the existing single line railway to double line and the construction of a new rail line connecting Chittagong-Cox’s Bazar-Gundum.
The Dhaka-Chittagong Expressway is a new 225 km long, 6-lane highway in Bangladesh that will replace the existing 4-lane Dhaka to Chittagong National Highway. The new expressway will have 7 interchanges, 44 vehicle underpasses, 64 underpasses, and 3 rest areas. The project will be implemented through the Public Private Partnership (PPP) on build, own, operate and transfer (BOOT) basis. The cost of the project is estimated at $8.6 billion if made totally elevated, but it will drop to $3.4 billion if made at-grade elevated. The construction works of the expressway are planned to start from January 2018.
Aiming to bring the tourist city of Cox's Bazar under the railway network, the construction work on 100.83 kilometer Dohazari-Ramu-Cox's Bazar single-line dual-gauge rail track will begin in July, 2017. On 28 September 2016, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved around Tk. 12,000 crore (US$ 1.5 billion) for the mega project. This loan comprises the largest ever investment in railways by ADB. The Greater Dhaka Sustainable Urban Transport Project is a 20 km long Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) route from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport to Gazipur. The project includes a dedicated bus lane, reconstruction of a bridge, construction of flyovers, a bus depot, and 25 stations. The project will cost $255 million and is expected to be completed within the next 30 months. The BRT Route-3 will be extended up to Keraniganj, and the World Bank has offered a $250 million loan for the construction of the Airport-Mohakhali phase of BRT-3.
